Over the past four years, the Chadsey Condon Youth Committee has received multiple mini-grants to work with our youth. In 2014 we received a grant from Community Connections for a college prep and community leadership initiative. In 2015 we received a grant from the Partnership for youth to do SAT Prep classes at our office and college tours. In 2015 we received a community connections grant to do a community clean up with the youth. In 2016 we received a grant to do college prep and tours. In 2017 we received a grant from Community Connections to do a Tour of Michigan and expose our youth to different parts of our great state. Over all we received over $19,000 from mini-grants for youth projects.
Since September 2016 we have held monthly youth nights for youth ages 13-18. Youth nights usually consist of a guest speaker, food and games. Between 20 and 35 youth have been involved and attend each month. Speakers for youth nights have included university officials who shared information of about FASFA, college readiness, and SAT Prep. Also, a representative from Detroit Promise Scholarship has spoken to our youth and as a result multiple students have gotten full-ride scholarships to Michigan Universities.
We also have had presentations from career professionals to share what it takes to get certain jobs including a surgeon, a City Official, a Pharmacist and more. We had various community resource presentations including one from the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD), Detroit Land and Water Works, and more. From November 2017 to May 2018 we held a series of workshops for the youth leaders in our group. The youth presented leadership information to their peers by picking a topic, putting together a presentation with support from staff, and then giving the workshop on their own.
